Time Flies

As you all have noticed, I have been exceedingly slack about posting to my blog. The truth of the matter is I am spending as much time as possible with my wife and our 14 month old daughter. I know it is better for my business to post regularly, keep things interesting, but really, if you were me, which would you rather do? Play with your daughter or write blog posts? I will update... sometime, just not right now!

A beautiful wedding at the Ballantyne Resort in Charlotte, NC

We shot a great wedding in Charlotte, North Carolina last weekend at the Ballantyne Resort.
First, a huge high five to Christina and Chad, the bride and groom, for being to so into the photography. They were so generous with their time that we were able to capture some incredible shots that we often don't get a chance to do. It was so much fun and so exciting to get the chance to really make a beautiful bride and an attractive groom really shine. As another bonus, I got to see Kaitlin and Justin, another couple whose wedding I photographed in Charlotte! (You can find their slideshow in my earlier posts). It is always great to see friends from previous weddings doing so well.

Second, let me give a round of applause to the Ballantyne Resort staff, headed by Jennifer. I have never been treated so well by any resort. The smallest request was treated as important. Not only did they make sure that the bride and groom had a perfect experience, they made sure I had a perfect experience. My apologies to the rest of the Ballantyne staff that I met but whose names I do not remember. Thanks to all of you for making my job so much easier with your helpfulness.

The Ballantyne Hotel proved to be a great place not just for a beautiful wedding, but also as a backdrop for lots of great photos. Make sure you view the slideshow!

A great wedding at Pawley's Island and Debordieu Colony

I am really blessed and lucky to shoot a lot of great weddings, but every now and then a couple and a wedding comes along that just makes me fall in love with wedding photography all over again. Meg and Bob got married in the amazing little chapel on Pawley's Island, South Carolina and held their reception at Debordieu Colony Resort. They have such incredibly fun family and friends, the weather was perfect, the chapel was great, even their dog/ring bearer Huck was on his best behavior (maybe it was the doggy tux).

The reception was equally amazing at Debordieu. Luke Wilson, the owner and creative force of Fleur - Luke Wilson Special Events did an exceptional job of creating a breathtaking reception space. Amazing centerpieces and chandeliers, exquisite lighting (making my job easier), and a seamlessly smooth pace all night were the result of Luke's work.

The catering coordinator at Debordieu Colony, Jessica and her whole staff created a yummy feast.

It was a great weekend and an amazing wedding.

She not only beautiful, she's fun too! A gorgeous day, a fun bride, and a Mother of the Bride that made really strong coffee! What more can I ask for on a bridal shoot! She and her fiance Bob will be getting married in Pawley's Island at the Pawley's Island Chapel this weekend, with an incredible reception at Pawley's Plantation. The whole shebang is being arranged by Luke Wilson Special Events based in Charleston. A great organization. I can't wait to see what he has put together for this wedding! It will be a great weekend.

Isle of Palms Restaurant, Hucks Lowcountry Table

I recently had the great opportunity to shoot images for a Restaurant owned and run by friends of mine (and previous wedding clients!) JJ Kern is the owner and Head Chef of the amazing restaurant Hucks Lowcountry Table. I was blown away by his amazing food and beautiful presentation. Shrimp, pork chops, crab, pasta - all locally sourced, all hand made, it was too good to be true!

JJ was killing me, because every dish was brought straight from the kitchen, steaming hot and smelling great, and I was supposed to photograph it, not eat it. I held out as long as I could, but I had many forkfuls of great food when it was over. JJ also sent me home with an incredible dinner for Kelly and me.

By the way, if you go to the restaurant, tell them I sent you, and make sure you order a blueberry mojito.

Ohhh, yeah!

Lifetime Network Television Show Get Married

So, I filmed my "Ask the Expert" segment for The Lifetime Network Television Show Get Married! It was huge fun, great people, very laid back. We talked on camera for about 45 minutes, from which they will take the best and cut it down to a two to three minute segment. I don't know yet when it will air, but they said probably midsummer. Alongside the interview will be images that I submitted to them, so it will be a good time.

It was really fun, and I think they should ask me to be a guest host on a regular basis (guest co-host?, co-co-host?, whatever! I'll do it, 'cause it's fun!)

I meant to get some behind the scenes shots and video clips, but Kelly was tied up with Marley and got shut out while we were filming (oh no). So, my behind the scenes idea will have to wait (if I go back on the show in the future...)

When I know the air date, I will let everyone know!

Finally, our lives are slowly returning to normal (or what Kelly and I refer to as New Normal). Hi everyone!
I am sorry I haven't been keeping up with the blog. As some of you know, it has been an emotional roller coaster for our family since Christmas. The emotional roller coaster we were on before Christmas was like the first couple of small stretches that led up to the giant, corkscrewing, loop-the-looping, gut churning craziness that was the first few months of 2009 that was the result of my mother in law passing away. Finally (I say looking over my shoulder, knocking on wood, and crossing my fingers) things seem to be settling down. I put this out there as a way to explain the absolute absence of blog updates or website changes.

Now that life is getting back to normal, things are moving quickly with the wedding season. I am shooting weddings like crazy with several other projects that I am working on behind the scenes also moving forward in exciting directions.

The immediate big news is that this Sunday I will be filming a segment for the Lifetime Network national television show Get Married. I am quite excited about this opportunity! I don't know what the air date is, but you can be sure I will let all of you know when I know. My segment will be the "Ask the Expert" segment, and I will be talking about photography (obviously), but also the importance of a professionally designed archival wedding album that tells the story of the wedding day. Images of my work and albums will be included along with my interview. Exciting stuff!

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!

I officially declare my baby to be the cutest baby in all the world! Maybe I'm biased, but come on! Just look at her! This has been a mega-crazy year, in some bad ways, but in some very outstandingly awesome ways too! How crazy? well, I'm writing this post at 1:15 in the am because this is about the only chance I have had to write! I'm not complaining, I just want everyone to know why the blogging has been sparse. I know there are thousands of you out there, waiting daily for me to post... ok, maybe not, but I like to tell myself that. For those who do read this, I know I have not been posting.
What can I say, other than things are busy but great. I have a beautiful, dynamic, energetic baby, a hottie wife who is my best friend, some of the best friends any man could ask for in this world (although they don't all religiously read my blog, but we'll let that slide), there is just so much that I am thankful for in this life! 2008 has been a fat sack of madness at times, but we knew that was coming. I didn't meet all of my personal goals for 2008, but I am not the first new parent who underestimated the challenges of a baby (not to mention all of the other stuff that went on in 2008). But, the things that matter - my relationship with my wife is awesome, I have a healthy baby, a friend who is in the military is currently at home with his family excelling at his career, other friends are healthy and happy, photography is as amazing to me as it always has been, my family is hanging in there with their health issues, and are doing ok for now - those are things I am deliriously thankful for. We will be travelling a lot over the next five or six days, travel that will be a real challenge. Nonetheless, I hope to have a great Christmas and get home safe and sound and healthy. To everyone that reads this post, have a great Christmas (or holiday of your choice). Be well. And send a big thank you out there for all that you have. Talk to you soon (hopefully)!

Things are a little teeny weeny bit more settled (or I have adapted to the madness, one way or the other). So I finally post another wedding. Judging by my blog, you would think I fell off the face of the earth around about September! I haven't posted slideshows or blogs or kept all of you up to date on what I've been doing... but boy, oh boy, have things been crazy! Here is a short list to bring everyone up to date:

Marley is four months old now! WOW! She is talking and singing and showing more and more personality each day..... and she just woke up from her nap early, so I might have to cut this list off and finish it later.... maybe she will go back to sleep.... all right! Kelly, got her to go back to sleep!

We have moved into our new house. It is amazing, but I never knew we had so much JUNK!

Weddings and engagement shoots have been keeping me jumping. I few weeks ago I ripped my pants while hopping up on a handrail for a better angle... I guess I need to get back in the gym and get rid of my baby weight.

Thankfully, as much as I love destination weddings, I haven't had any more since August. I really don't want to leave Marley and Kelly for any longer than is necessary.

Both sides of our familes have been dealing with some very scary cancer issues. For some the results have been good, for others, not so good.

My wife Kelly (a sculptor and potter) just had an amazing national craft show in Charlotte, NC. She was picked up by two galleries and had her best retail sales ever! Not bad for three months after having a baby! You can see her work at www.kellythielpottery.com

That is a short list of the crazy stuff going on in our lives! Kelly and I keep a sense of humor about it all most days. I think of what the quote from Voltaire - when someone said to him, "Life is hard", he replied, ""Compared to what?". Our lives are very, very blessed, if also very, very crazy right now. I guess I wouldn't have it any other way.

All right, I have to get back to editing my weddings!

I have to get out and vote today too! I am really excited about this election (for the first time in my life), and, for what it is worth, I am really pulling for Obama to win.

I hope all of you that keep up with my blog are all doing really well!

Antigua wedding week is going well

Day two in Antigua! I had a couple's shoot with the wedding couple yesterday afternoon at their resort. Man, they are so much fun to work with! They are great. We took lots of shots and I was dressed for water, so I took some shots of them on the edge of a dock as I waded around in chest deep water. Now that I think of it, I should have had them take a photo of me... walking around in chest deep water with $6000 worth of camera in my hands! It was a great time, and the rest of the week will just be even better!

On the home front, Kelly seems to be doing well with Marley. Kelly is amazing. It is always hard for me to be away from her. At least on this trip I stay busy with photos and photo editing, blogging, etc. Even so, I miss her all the time.

Destination wedding in Antigua

Well, I got into Antigua last night. It was a full day of travel - 12 plus hours start to finish, but it all went really smoothly. These days, that is all that matters - no missed connections, no overbooked flights, no problems. There is a lot of emotional weight behind this trip. Not only do I really like this couple and want to do an exceptional job for them (which is really the case for any of my clients - I wouldn't take a job for people I didn't like), but this is my first time away from Kelly and our new daughter Marley.

The wedding couple is using a Canadian destination event company called Luxe, and that company is fantastic. Very organized, very easy to work with. The travel planning they did for me has been flawless so far. They put me in the St. James Club here on Antigua. It is an all inclusive resort on a beautiful promontory. Outstanding landscaping (it may sound strange, that I notice the landscaping, but Kelly long ago turned on my love of landscaping. There are so many plants that I wish we could grow at home, but Charleston isn't quite tropical enough). While I'm giving out compliments, praise goes to Think Tank Photo, maker of professional photographer travel bags and packs. Man, what outstanding equipment! On this trip, I am carrying one of the rolling bags, a small backpack, and the airport intelligence laptop case (agh, I will post the names of the cases later, I can't remember them right now). It all worked beautifully. Also, the fact that I can secure all of my stuff in my room with the built in cable lock on the rolling case makes it even better. (Note to Think Tank Photo - if I could slip the cable through the zippers of the laptop bag and backpack, thereby securing them and their contents as well, that would be great... small steel cable loops as zipper pulls maybe?). The only drawback to being able to pack all of my equipment into such a small backpack is that my back is killing me from lugging all that weight through airports. I was able to fit the backpack and laptop bag under the seat of the smallest commuter plane in the carribean, thereby keeping my equipment with me at all times.

Today I have a fashion shoot with the couple at the Carlisle Bay Resort, the location of the wedding on Saturday. It is supposed to be an extraordinary place. I can't wait. I am ready with my regular setup, but a new twist I have added to things this time around is the new underwater housing I have for my camera. I have tested it out at home, now I can't wait to use it on a shoot with a couple. Either in the pool or the ocean, it will make for a beautiful new addition to my wedding work. I could also imagine some nighttime underwater work in the swimming pool against the underwater pool light! Wow! Now, if I can just get the bride to go swimming in her wedding dress after the reception... I hope, I hope, I hope....

It was hard for me to leave home. Kelly is there with Marley. Marley is now a month old. She has been a great baby, but (no surprise) is not sleeping much at night. Up till now, we have been taking three hour shifts at night taking care of Marley. I was worried that with me out of town, Kelly would be up all night if Marley was fussy. Thankfully, Kelly found a way to get Marley to sleep for several hours at a time in bed with Kelly. That makes me feel so much better. I felt really guilty leaving her with Marley for five days to go off and shoot a destination wedding in Antigua. Of course, even if things go well for Kelly, I plan to reciprocate. There is a retreat for female artists that I found for Kelly that I would love for her to go to. She hasn't been able to do much in the way of sculpture or pottery for months now, and I know she feels out of touch with that part of herself. She is really talented, and I would hate for her to feel disconnected from her art for too long. (If you want to see her work, go to www.kellythielpottery.com). Marley had a rough night before we left, so yesterday I was working on about ... 1?, 2? hours of sleep. Felt a wee bit tired at the airport. But huge props to our friend Eric for taking me to the airport at an ungodly early hour so Kelly didn't have to.

24 Hours before our baby was born!

My wife and I have been so busy, that we didn't get a chance to take her pregnancy photos until just last week... little did we know that 24 hours later Kelly would go in for a C-section! Baby Marley was born a week ago today. Both Kelly and Marley are doing really well now. The first few days were brutal, but thanks to our amazing friends, the experienced touch of Kelly's ob-gyn, a great lactation consultant, and the amazing, caring attitude of our pediatrician, we have had a couple of great days. Little Marley is gaining weight, looks far less yellow than a day ago, and we are really doing well. I really just don't have the words to describe what this experience has been like this past week. Amazing, terrifying, challenging, emotional, beautiful... well, those words are inadequate, but it's all I've got.

What a great weekend, what a great wedding. There is so much I could write! Two fun families that came together in the beautiful city of Charlotte for a big huge celebration. Kaitlin and Justin were all about great photos (making them as awesome couple, if you ask me). It was an unbelievable weekend. I photographed the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner Friday, the wedding (of course) Saturday, and even got to do a "fashion shoot" with the couple on Sunday! What a great weekend! I was beat. I got home on Monday, which explains why it took me until Wednesday night to get the slideshow up! (also some minor technical troubles...)

Thanks to Kaitlin, Justin, and both of their families for including me in their big day. Weddings like yours are so much fun to be a part of! Kaitlin and Justin - have a blast in Jamaica!

What a great day already. Went to La Brasserie for breakfast (if you are in Whistler, go to La Bra for brekkie, trust me). Eggs, bacon, hash browns, toast, awesome high grade coffee, french toast - yep, I had all that. Gotta eat hearty in the mountains! Headed out soon to go shoot a battle of the bands, then I will wander around the village, catching shots. Lots of on mountain stuff I want to shoot too. Then tonight I am shooting the Brave Art opening. That will be great. Always great work by amazing artists. It is a beautiful sunny day here, not really all that cold either. More later!

The World Ski and Snowboard Festival

3200 miles. From Charleston, South Carolina to Whistler, British Columbia. I got out of bed at 3:45 am to catch a flight (Kelly got up too to drive me to the airport - Kelly freakin' rocks!). Flights went smoothly, my bags made it, the travel gods must have been smiling on me. The only bad part - Kelly couldn't come. That sucks. So here I am in Whistler, BC as one of the photographers for the Telus World Ski and Snowboard Festival (TWSSF)! For the next seven days I will be out shooting anything and everything for the festival, along with a whole crew of photographers that I look forward to meeting. It should be good!

Back in the water!

Spring has held off a bit. It has been windy and a bit chilly, even in the incredibly sunshine. So, the new surf kayak I bought a few weeks ago has been sitting, unused and neglected as I made excuses not to go freeze my butt off in the surf. So today, I finally got sick of my excuses and sick of not working out, scrambled into my wetsuit and went out for a paddle. It was a little windy, a little choppy with no real waves, but, you know what, it was perfect. I've got no, zip, nada, paddling muscles anymore. I haven't surf kayaked (or kayaked in any form) for something like five years. I've been working out, lifting, running, all of that good stuff, but there is no workout for those weird little muscles that you use when you kayak. My hand squeezer muscles are fried, and I think I will feel it tomorrow in my shoulders and back. But it was awesome! A beautiful afternoon, that great Victoria's Secret light (warm and low sunset kind of light), and, as hard as I was working, I definitely did not get cold. Even the short session I had left me feeling flushed clean (physically and metaphorically). I wish I had gotten out there sooner! It feels good to be back in the ocean again. How can I live at the beach and hardly ever get in the water!?

By the way, Oreo's and skim milk after paddling is a brilliant combination.

The Cools

I was recently hired by a Charleston based band, The Cools to do some promo shots for them. They are crazy people, and a lot of fun. I got to play with some of my latest strobist style lighting toys. The results were really pleasing!

Spring is springing!

Today is the first official day of spring! It has been an easy winter here on Folly Beach, but we really see the difference when spring starts coming in the door. We hung our hummingbird feeder two days ago, and had a hummingbird feeding at it within the hour. Lots of birds that we haven't seen for months are back now. Robins were here in huge flocks weeks ago. The plants are all budding out.

There are times when I wish I lived in Colorado or in Whistler, BC or in just about any ski town you could name, but it is great when nature starts coming to life this early. I would love to be on the slopes, but I also love Charleston this time of year.

I got a new surf kayak a few weeks ago, now I'm just waiting for a nice day when the wind is blowing like crazy. I can handle the water temperature in my wetsuit, but being out there in crazy wind is no fun at all! When I get out there for the first time, I will post some photos.

Trip to the Mountains

A friend of mine has a great rental vacation cabin in the mountains of North Carolina. Since he needed top notch promo photos of the cabin, Kelly and I went up to Saluda, North Carolina for four days. Man, what an easy drive from Charleston! Right up I-26 to the cool little town of Saluda. We took the dog, read a lot (I made it through two books!), walked around the shops in Saluda, drove through the little back roads in the area (in my man-wagon - the Subaru Outback). We stumbled upon an amazing little tunnel that the local kids obviously spend their free time painting graffiti on. What a great way to get away for a couple of days. You'll see on some of the photos, I've been having fun with Lightroom adjustments.

The Big News!

So, you ask, what is the big news? Kelly and I are having a baby! If you have been around us recently, you know already that we are having a baby (after all, Kelly is five months along). She is just starting to show. Unless you look at her from the side in a tight tshirt, you would never be able to tell. It has been smooth sailing so far for her (and yes, she has said the same thing, that's not my interpretation of it) now we are close to the third trimester. We are looking at baby boot camp classes, breastfeeding classes, orientation sessions at the hospital. It's all pretty cool. We have a name for the little munchkin too. We're having a girl, and we are going to name her Marley. Kelly and I were both really pulling for a girl, so that is great. All the tests (we did an amnio along with all the ultrasounds) have all shown that we are having a healthy little girl. I can already picture it - a world famous snowboarder/artist/photographer/brain surgeon.... why not? That's not putting too much pressure on her, right? So, if all things go well, come July, little Marley will be taking charge!

Cool, fun couples are what being a wedding photographer is all about, and I got to shoot another cool, fun couple just recently. Amber and Ollie have been together since high school and, now college graduates, are getting married! They are attractive and fun to hang out with, and open to anything (we did some shots in a parking deck elevator (sounds naughty, but it was just good clean photography). Professional Photographers of South Carolina Meeting

Last night was a great meeting of the Coastal Region PPSC group. Chris and Cami of Chris and Cami Photography hosted our meeting. It is always great to meet some new photographers and strengthen connections with people I have already met. Chris is a really nice, good hearted guy and is a strobist type of guy just like me, so it was a pleasure to talk with him.

New York, a new year, and a new blog!

For New Year's my wife, Kelly, and I went to visit friends that live in Manhattan. I love visiting Manhattan. The culture, the energy, the shows, the people - I love getting to soak it all in for a brief period of time and carry that energy with me when I return home to Charleston. I love living in Charleston, but I could return to Manhattan on a regular basis. So, our friends have to stay there, and I need to start booking more weddings there. It would be a huge amount of fun to shoot a wedding in Manhattan. With the cost of living what it is in New York in general, it is probably more cost effective for a bride to hire me from out of the area. Regardless, Manhattan was a great trip, and we got to spend some real quality time with our friends that we haven't seen in a couple of years. On top of all of that, Kelly and I got tickets to Wicked. Breathtaking is the best way to describe it. Every aspect of that show is breathtaking. See you in New York! The Big Change Over

So, as of this post, my blog will no longer be, well, posted, with Iweb on my mac. Once I play with Blogger a little bit more and get a better understanding of the ins and outs, I will attempt to switch all of my old posts over to blogger. If that doesn't work out, I will post my New Year's trip to Manhattan as my first post. what better way to start of the new year and new blog!

For those of you visiting for the first time... well, there isn't much exciting here yet. My old blog was driving me crazy, so hopefully this will be a better setup for me.
